Where did it all start?

Koken Barbers Supply Company crafted a lot of these chairs for barbers in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Koken was the largest barber supply company in the United States and it was also the brand of barber chair.

However, it wasn’t all glitters and happy days because in 1950s, the company went out of business and for period of time, a Japanese company used the brand name Koken.

Sometimem, the frames also feature elaborate wood carvings. You can also notice, if you look closely at these barber chairs, even the metalwork was elaborate. Aside from this, the seat brackets, some parts pf the footrest and the base all have beautiful scroll designs and it high-quality craftmanship is easily noticeable. • hello to kwame! i am a disabled vet and i have spent 2 years looking for a special unusual koken to love forever! the problem i have is i want to start the restoration process but can not find out which model i have. it is a squarish porcelain seat frame bottom and arms as well as base. it is hydraulic, and has no headrest, or holes in seatback upholstery. the base to back pieces are very nice aluminium material. the strange parts are next. it has a nice porcelain tray that slides out from right side seat bottom!! i guess it is like 10 inches by 6 inches. also this unit has an awesome steampunk looking foot rest contraption with gears and cranks and a long screw rod the one side of the foot rest is upholstered and the other cast aluminium with koken script and scrolly stuff(which needs replacing since it is broken). any help would be appreciated greatly.
